Amblyopia

What is Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)?

This occurs when the eyes are misaligned or when one eye has a much different prescription than the other. The brain will "shut off" the image from the turned or blurry eye. If left untreated, amblyopia (lazy eye) can stunt the visual development of the affected eye, resulting in permanent vision impairment. Dr. Nelson checks for amblyopia and can provide corrective treatment. Amblyopia is often treated by patching the stronger eye for a period of time.

Catching this condition early is important. Dr. Nelson participates in the American Optometry Association's "InfantSEE" program which provides exams at no cost for all infants between the age of 6 - 12 months. Amblyopia is one of the eye disorders screened for during this exam.
